Are you looking for a novel which is heartbreaking and heartwarming? A novel which is funny, sad and deeply moving? Reach for Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, a debut by Gail Honeyman from 2017.
The summary is as follows: Eleanor Oliphant leads a simple life. She wears the same clothes to work every day, eats the same meal deal for lunch every day and buys the same two bottles of vodka to drink every weekend.
Eleanor Oliphant is happy. Nothing is missing from her carefully timetabled life. That’s how she’s kidded herself, anyway.
One simple act of kindness will shatter the well-defended ramparts Eleanor has built around herself. Now she must learn how to navigate the world that everyone else seems to take for granted – while searching for the courage to face the dark corners she’s avoided all her life.
Change can be good. Change can be bad. But will any change be better after the protective shell is breached?
Born and raised in Stirling, Gail Honeyman’s (Gail Honeyman) love for reading began early, with frequent trips to the local library. She pursued French language and literature at Glasgow University and even started a postgraduate course in French poetry at the University of Oxford. However, realizing that academia wasn’t her true calling, Gail embarked on various backroom jobs, including roles as a civil servant and university administrator before embarking on writing.
Winner of the Costa First Novel Award 2017
