Shadows at Noon: The South Asian Twentieth Century by Joya Chatterji

Joya Chatterji FBA is Professor of South Asian History and a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. She specialises in modern South Asian history and was the editor of the journal Modern Asian Studies for ten years.

Shadows at Noon is about India in the 20th century, which means taking it from the late Victorian period, when it had become an empire under Queen Victoria, through to its present form, which consists of three large nations—India, Pakistan and Bangladesh—important on a worldwide scale.

Unlike other histories of the region which concentrate exclusively on politics, here food, leisure and the household are given as much importance as nationhood, migration, and the state. Chatterji makes contemporary South Asia accessible to everyone. The cultural vibrancy, diversity, social structures and political make-up of the Indian sub-continent are brought to life in rich detail. It’s heartening to hear the message from this historian that the peoples of this region have more things in common than in difference.
